Overview

The Allahabad Bible Seminary was established in July 1942 under the auspices of One Mission Society, formerly known as Oriental Missionary Society and OMS International respectively which aims to see the Gospel of Jesus Christ spread throughout the world and to see God glorified in all that we say and do. The Seminary was launched with 18 students with a revival and holiness convention. In the initial stage, the OMS staff was headed by Dr. Eugene and Mrs. Esther Erny (former OMS missionaries to China) who were joined by Wesley and Betsy Duewel, new recruits from the U.S.A. Charles A. Cowman, founder of the Society in Japan, 1901, believed strongly in the importance of well-trained nationals for the growth and development of the Church. Guided by the ministry philosophy of OMS (viz. A trained corps of national workers, evangelism with the goal of planting indigenous Churches), the format of A.B.S. training is centered on biblical studies, development of spiritual life and practical experience in evangelistic outreach.

It was begun with the sole purpose of training native pastors, evangelists and church planters. It focuses on effective preparation for Spirit filled ministry with a deeper concern for winning men and women to Christ in India. At present, the Seminary has been blessed with students from 26 states of the Indian Union representing major denominational churches, para-church organizations and institutions. Thus the Allahabad Bible Seminary is multi-cultural, multi-lingual and inter-denominational in nature and character. The Seminary provides sound academic and ministerial exposure throughout the study programmes. The Seminary involves in the programmes of Evangelism and Societal Empowerment in the neighboring villages.

Registration
The Seminary is governed by the Allahabad Bible Seminary Board of Trustees with OMS International having only membership on the board along with members of the Evangelical Church of India and others.

Affiliation
Allahabad Bible Seminary is affiliated for the Bachelor of Divinity (B.D) degree programme (Five Year and Four Year) and Bachelor of Christian Studies (B.C.S) with the Senate of Serampore College (University) both in English and Hindi medium.

Location
The Seminary is located at 60/64, Stanley Road, Allahabad, U.P. just opposite the Civil Hospital, on a spacious nine-acre campus which provides a setting conducive for quiet study and devotion. Allahabad, with a population of about 20, 00, 000 is located in the densely populated Ganges valley where there exists great scope for sharing Christ in hundreds of villages which are almost entirely without a Christian witness.

The junction of the Ganges and Jamuna Rivers (The “Sangam”) at Allahabad is a holy place of Hindus, visited annually by millions of pilgrims. The nearby Allahabad University and numerous colleges provide the intellectual stimulation of an educational center. Thus situated in mutit-religious-cultural center ABS students are able to learn the best cross-cultural approaches to a wide range of people such as mela crowds, university students, villagers and urban residents who represent all the major religions of India.

The Seminary faculty and students also have opportunities to hear many Christian leaders and speakers, both Indian and foreign, who visit the churches and institutions of the city. As opportunity affords, such visitors are also invited to speak in the Seminary chapel services.

Mission Statement
Founded by OMS International, Allahabad Bible Seminary exists primarily to serve the Evangelical Church of India as well as the whole Church of Christ, particularly in North India.

Allahabad Bible Seminary aims to train and equip young men and women for pioneer evangelism and church planting by providing sound evangelical theological education and in depth pastoral formation. It is a denominational Seminary of the Evangelical Church of India with a nation wide interdenominational vision and outreach.

Aims and Objectives
The basic purpose of Allahabad Bible Seminary is the effective preparation of Spirit filled ministry with a deeper concern for winning men and women to Christ and for building up His body in India.

The Seminary aims to maintain a Bible-centered teaching format with a contemporary emphasis. This is done in a setting that is thoroughly evangelical in theology, and with a strong practical emphasis on holiness of thought and life. The Bible is recognized as the supreme authority in all matters of faith and practice and is interpreted in harmony with the historic evangelical understanding of the Christian faith.

The seminary seeks to maintain high educational standards and follow sound teaching methods to integrate supervised field work with other aspects of the curriculum. An attempt is made to relate each subject so far as possible to the needs of the Church in India.

The seminary emphasizes evangelism, church planting, and practical ministerial activities.

Statement of Faith

We believe that the Bible is the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God.

We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three Persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His pre-millennial return in power and glory.

We believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful humanity, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely necessary.

We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whom the believer is sanctified and enabled to live a holy life.

We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost: they that are saved to the resurrection of life, and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.

We believe in the spiritual unity of believer in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Cooperative Organizations
Major denominational Churches and Mission Societies in various parts of India use Allahabad Bible Seminary as the training institution for their pastors and evangelists. Moreover, we have partnership with Churches, Para-Church Organizations and Theological Institutions.
